Khadas Tone2 Pro DAC/Amp Delivers A Bigger Digital Bang For Your Buck
Last month I reviewed the super Bolt DAC from Helm Audio. This tiny device plugs into a smartphone and instantly upgrades the audio and will even play MQA files from TIDAL Masters. The little Bolt doesn’t need any batteries and it’s the best way of using a good pair of wired earphones or headphones with more recent iPhones that don’t feature a headphone jack.
However, if you want something a bit better that’s flexible enough to handle a digital stream from something like a CD player, you’ll need a more substantial DAC. This month I’ve been testing a new and affordable DAC/AMP that’s just about small enough to use on the move but is more at home with a full-size audio system or when listening via a smartphone when you’re relaxing at home.
The Khadas Tone2 Pro can play just about every music format imaginable, whether that is MP3, PCM or DSD. It can even fully unfold MQA files. This is a versatile performer with a high-quality ESS DAC chip at its heart that offers the kind of sound you might get with a full-sized piece of audio kit. The Tone2 Pro is slightly larger than a credit card and takes the form of a wedge incised with angular lines.
