Hormones are vital chemical messengers that control many important functions within the human body. These processes include mood, growth, reproduction and metabolism. Hormones are manufactured by various glands in the endocrine system including the thyroid, adrenal glands and the reproductive organs. When the levels of hormones are maintained within the body everything runs smoothly. However Imbalances in the levels can cause a variety of hormonal disorders.

Hormonal Conditions happen when there is an excess or deficiency of a hormone in the blood stream. They may be either short-term or lasting. Anyone at any age can have a hormonal condition. Such conditions include: Thyroid conditions, Diabetes and PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). They all have their own unique effects on the body but all stem from the common problem of disturbed hormone production or action.

A number of things can cause hormonal imbalances. An obvious answer would be an endocrine imbalance. For example an under-active thyroid gland results in a decrease in hormones being produced. This can cause tiredness and weight gain. Conversely an over-active thyroid gland will cause thinner people to drop even more weight, but may cause irritability and anxiety. Lifestyle pressures such as eating poorly, not exercising enough, living under chronic stress and deprivation of sleep can also affect hormones.

The symptoms of anything to do with a hormonal disorder can be quite varied, as it can differ with the severity and the type of hormone imbalancement. Whereas for some people the symptoms can seem quite insignificant, for other people they can have huge effects on their lives. Some of these symtoms include, weight gain or loss, changes in mood, tiredness, a change in concentration or a change in your sleep pattern.

Finding an endocrine disorder quickly is important in managing the condition. Doctors will generally do blood tests to check for high or low levels of the hormones. Sometimes, the doctor will have to do imaging tests to check out the glands. We all have our treatments once a diagnosis has been made.

Medication that regulate the production of hormones can be administered. For example, in cases of hormone deficiency, hormone replacement therapy can be prescribed. If excess hormones are produced then other medications may be used in combination with hormone replacements. Lifestyle changes such as minimising alcohol, maintaining a healthy balanced diet, exercising regularly, and having sufficient sleep, can be very effective.

Nutrition is especially important as the intake of good fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals from foods can influence hormone synthesis and balance. Cutting back on processed food and sugar, and good fats would also help prevent any further hormone imbalance. Managing stress through meditation or yoga could also have a good impact on hormone levels, particularly stress hormones such as cortisol.

Hormonal imbalances may have also have an impact on mental and emotional health and stability. It is quite usual to experience anxiety, depression, irritability and decreased ability to concentrate; taking care of these issues is just as important as the rest of the treatmentplan.

In summary, hormonal disorders are widespread and treatable conditions that can lead to life-affecting issues if left untreated. They are caused by various identifiable factors and their symptoms can often be easily detected. By consulting with health professionals promptly and making the appropriate lifestyle adjustments, individuals can lead healthy lives and keep their hormonal health in check.
