Hi Friends,

I recieved an email from Ms Bulnez telling me that Ms Sprenger rectified all unclear things in an email.
As Ms Sprenger mentiones only the group/individual problem in her mail, I doubt that Ms Bulnes understood the real problem or want to take part in it.
So I wrote an email to Ms Sprenger.

I post it here for you to know what is going on.
I am thinking of also forwarding it to other classes, if all of them sent this email to Ms Sprenger they might move the deadline...?
What do you think...

Here is the email I wrote, it s a great exercise for WreP by the way.

Hello Ms Sprenger,

I am writing for you for the class 1ES4 because we, and
also other people have problems with the Word task.

I wrote to Ms Bulnez before and she told me that you
clarified our problem, but the published rectification was
not actually our problem.

I will try to explain our proplem to you and hope you can
help us out.

Plenty people from our class are very worried with the
deadline. In our Word class Mr Manning said that it was
only in January and that it was a group product, at least
the brochure for Europe Day. Now it was published
officially only on Friday that everybody has to do it and
until the 14th. At the beginning of the Year we joined
together in groups to work on the leaflet, now everybody
has to do it and hand it in so soon, and because of the
many other assignments, many students now feel that it is
almost impossible to stick to this deadline. We also
explained our problem to various teachers (like Ms Pau and
Ms Dolphin,) who encourage us to suggest a changing in
somethings to you. Our own class superviser is ill.
The deadline is one problem we face, but another one is
there.

The brochure is requiered to be handed in in the font
"TheSans." But this font is only availible in school, not
on homecomputers. Actually this would not be a bigger
problem to simply change this font in school and burn it
there.
But the problem is that many of us are using Office2007. As
this is a new programme I discovered that there is a change
when one writes a document in 07 and opens it on a non 07
computer. I do not mean the format, even if you safe it in
the old modus this problem is there. you can open the
document but it looks compleatly different in terms of
structres. I had the problem with my leaflet, I wrote it at
home, saved it in the old format, opened it on a school
computer and suddendly it has one page more, all headings
are mixed up and so on. I think this is a bug, a mistake of
Microsoft which was not cured yet as it is still a young
program.

I see the only way to avoid this happening is to convert
the document into pdf, which keeps one from changing the
font in school. This Microsoft bug is disturbing and of
course neither the fault of the school or us, but it exists
and we have to deal with it now.

Due to the unhappy circumstances, the moved deadline, the
change from group-individual assignment, plenty other tasks
etc I would really like to ask you in the name of my class
but also others from the first ES year in order to meet us,
to make itpossible to change the one or the other thing. We
were thinking of extending the deadline at least for a week
and to change the font from "TheSans" to Arial. These two
fonts are so similar but would make it a lot more easier
for us to oppose the Office07 bug.

We are really concerned about this issue as most of us also
put so much effort in Research Skills where we will only
get assesst if we recieve the pass from the Word course.

Thank you very much in advance and best wishes

Hanna Lohmann and the entire 1ES4

And I also wrote to Mrs van der Star about the problem:

Hello Mrs van der Star,

I hope you are getting better, we heard that you are ill.
Our class is facing a problem with Word, which we discussed
with several teachers now during class but most also
advised us to inform you, though you were absent from
school, so I am sending you this email.

It is about our Word course.
We were told before that we have to hand it in in January
and that e.g. the leaflet was a group product.
Now it was published on Friday that it is an individual
assignment which needs to be handed in on the 14th.
Plenty of our classmembers got really worried with this, as
we have quite a lot deadlines at the moment and do not know
how to keep up.
The difficulties we have is because of a problem with the
course itself.
The leaflet has to be handed in in the font "TheSans". This
is a font which is installed on all the school's computers
but not on average homecomputers. This means we can not
finish this assinment at home but at least havt to change
the font in school. Which would not be an actual problem,
but since many of us are using Word2007 it is. It is
possible to save Word07 documents in a format which allows
to be opened on older like the school computers. But when
you do this the content gets mixed up, due to (this is want
I think is the only explaination) a bug in the system.
Word07 is so young that it is full of these bugs, one is
the different resolution in different word versions.
This means when we write our leaflet at home and bring it
to school in order to change the font there we also have
restructe the brochure due to this bug.
It happened to me before when we had to hand it in for
Wret. I wrote it at home, send it to school to print it
there and when I opened it, it suddendly had 3 pages
instead of 2. So before printing I had to shorten the
context immensly to make it fit.
The only way to prevent this happening is obviously to
convert the file into a pdf data. But then again it is not
possoble to change the font to the Sans in school.

This is what so many people worry about, that with all the
deadline in the next 10 days (Wret, Research Skills,
English Vocabulary Notebook, and oral exams in MGP and
English) it is almost impossible to also work out all the
word assinments in school before Friday.

So I first wrote all this to Ms Bulnes on Thursday who told
me then on Friday that Ms Sprenger rectified everything.
But Ms Sprenger only sent an email explaining that the
deadline is the 14th and it was an indivudual assignment.
She also told me if I had more problems I should contact Ms
Sprenger directly.
So I also wrote an email to Ms Sprenger now telling her
that her rectification did not help us with the described
problem at all.
I hope she will give us the chance to either extend the
deadline or allow us to hand in the brochure in Arial
instead of thesans. The two fonts are very similar and then
we could save our works as pdf and burn it at home.

For now I just wanted to inform you and hope that we can
solve things with Ms Sprenger.

Hope you are gettinger well soon,

Hanna Lohmann

freuendes Smilie

GO GO HANNA

I really wish that they pay attention to you and at least change the font ant postpone the deadline.

But the brochure is not the biggest probem. I don't know if you guys have read the instructions for the layout of the report...If you have not, you better take some pills before opening the module book...

And last but not least I summarised the problem, so if you have any friends from other classes who wanna join the war against word kindly give them this:

Word Problem
We, the First years of HEBO, have a problem with the course word.
We would like you to consider the following points and make a change if possible.
1) The deadline was moved from January to December 14th
2) Suddenly the brochure which was announced and said in the module book to be a group product is an individual assignment and thus a lot more work.
3) The font “TheSans” which is required for the brochure is a font which is not on average home computers, but only in school.
4) Plenty of the students are using office 2007. The program consist a bug. When opening a Office 2007 file on a computer with the old system, like in school the layout of document changes. So students either have to convert everything to pdf in order to prevent the Office 07 bug or do everything in school.

These four points really give some of us a problem, so we kindly ask you to change some things to make it easier for us.
We suggest to move the deadline and to allow us to use “Arial” as a font for the brochure, which is similar to “TheSans” but will allow us to work our things out at home. Not all of us live in Den Haag and especially with all the assignments it is not convenient to stay in school for a long time just to carry out tasks at the school computers.
We would be very happy if you could help us with this issue. We are very concerned with it, as a “pass” is essential to get a mark in research skills and we already invested so much time in research skills.

I really hope we'll get some answers soon. Really, it should be no trouble for them to accept another font (I mean: what the f**** does it matter?)) for the assignment and to change the deadline to the 21st, right?

Anyway, Hanna, you go girl! I think we all very much appreciate the effort you are putting in this for our class

Oh my gosh...I've just seen that the deadline has been moved to January 14.....unbelievable!
Let's celebrate with an orgy of alcohol...
I was thinking we should organize a dinner or meet the evening of the event's day. All together. Have dinner and have fun!
What do you think? After all, we are a group...

Actually I was thinking after Christmas, the exams and the project. I'm always willing to destroy my liver by drinking...
We should divide our class in subgroups, elect chairs and secretaries, and then vote when and where...
By the way, does anyone have Dimas' mobile number? I have to ask him what is he doing with the script.

I like the idea to have it after our project, I mean on that particular day!
We really should brainstorm!
I am out!
