Compact crossover sport utility vehicles, also known as small crossover SUVs, combine the attributes of compact cars and larger sport utility vehicles. Compact crossover SUVs measure 170-185 inches in length and their bodies are joined in single units with the chassis similar to a car's platform. They resemble regular SUVs with their tall head rooms, high ground clearances and distinct engine power.

There are several advantages to the crossover SUV design. Compact crossovers are lighter than real SUVs which make them easier to handle. The lighter weight also makes them more fuel efficient with fuel economy ratings comparable to mid-sized cars. They have slight off-road capabilities that are not possessed by compact cars.  Compact crossover SUVs are generally cheaper than their larger counterparts.

Two compact crossovers—the Nissan Rogue and Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class—are available to Canadian motorists. Though they differ in price points and some performance specifications, both possess the essential qualities and styling details of a true crossover sport utility vehicle. The Nissan Rogue and Mercedes-Benz GLK are also sold at certified pre-owned programs in Calgary, which means you can get a quality vehicle that's almost like new but at a lower price, and with an extended warranty intact.

The Nissan Rogue is the North American version of the Nissan Qashqai. Some Nissan Calgary dealers have this five-door compact crossover with a front engine, front-wheel or four-wheel drive layout in their car lots. The Rogue has a straight-four, 2.5-liter 170-horsepower engine. It comes standard with a continuously variable transmission. The Rogue has 18-inch polished wheels, leather seats, parking sensors, touch-screen navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, introduced in 2009, is a five-door luxury compact crossover SUV. It comes with a front engine layout available in four-wheel and rear-wheel drive trains. The GLK-Class comes standard with seven-speed automatic transmission. It has four engine options, and Mercedes Calgary dealers mostly carry the top-of-the-line 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine rated at 268 horsepower. A sunroof, 20-inch alloy wheels, climate control systems, Bluetooth, and leather interiors round up the features of the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class.

For more information on these compact crossovers, you can visit nissan-global.com and mercedes-benz.com, the manufacturer websites of the Nissan Rogue and the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, respectively. You can find listings of available units and prices of these SUVs at autotrader.ca and usedcarscanada.com. If you would like to test drive a new or certified pre-owned crossover SUV, you can drop by a Nissan or Mercedes Calgary dealer.
