| Competing For A Tennis Scholarship Students who are pursuing tennis scholarships need to be quite aggressive when applying to schools. Competition for these awards is much more intense than for typical college major scholarships. There is also competition from outside of the country, since many of the top schools recruit more than half of the players from foreign countries. Persistence, research and dedication can all help a student to find the correct path towards a tennis scholarship.
Starting Early
Athletes who want to win a tennis scholarship need to start planning early. This should begin with excellent academics in high school. High grades show that a student is dedicated to education. Good academic performance is also required by the college athletics associations that govern competitive play. Standardized tests need to be taken and the scores need to be above average. When applying to schools it is important to register with any applicable college athletic associations to make sure that the process of clearing a student for an athletic scholarship has been completed.
Working On Athletic Skills
Tennis skills are the key to winning a scholarship. This means maintaining excellent physical fitness and practicing every day. This type of dedication and passion for the sport is one of the elements that a coach will be looking for when considering an applicant. Training with a personal coach will help to perfect different swings and improve mobility on the court. Technical form is much more important to a recruiter than almost any other aspect of play.
Compete Often
No athlete will be offered tennis scholarships without a record of competitive play. This means entering into local competitions and working up to regional matches. Each match will help to improve the skill of the student and can start to establish a record of wins and losses. Recruiters will sometimes want to see the number of wins and losses that a student has in formal play. These statistics do not have to be perfect. Regardless, better averages will attract more attention from more coaches.
Create A Video
A proactive way to get the attention of recruiters and coaches at different colleges is to create a video that shows the best abilities of the student. Coaches do not want to see videos that have been highly edited or that have music playing the entire time. The best videos are compilations of matches. It is best not to cut away between games, because the coach will want to observe how the player reacts over the course of the entire match and between sets. A good video can help to draw the attention of recruiters and can contribute to winning a tennis scholarship.
