China's wood carving art originated from the Neolithic period. In the Hemudu culture in Yuyao, Zhejiang, more than 7,000 years ago, woodcarving fishes have appeared. The two generations of Qin and Han wood carving techniques tend to be mature and the painting and engraving techniques are delicate and perfect.
The appearance of Shicai wood carvings indicates that the ancient wood carving crafts has reached a very high level. The art of woodcarving in our country goes back to ancient times. The earliest woodcarving works we discovered are woodcarvings unearthed in Hemudu and woodcarvings unearthed in Xinle, Liaoning.
The carved fish unearthed from the Hemudu Site in Yuyao City of Zhejiang Province is of a T-shape, like a handle cane, with horizontal, oblique, and straight lines engraved on the handle. Another wood carving fish is 11 cm long and 3.5 cm high.
