The exhaust gases released after the combustion process is passed through the units of scrubber systems which uses alkaline material to treat the harmful gases and removes the harmful particulates and high sulphur content from it. The scrubbers mostly use non-chemicals to treat the gases so that it can be easily disposed of back to the sea safely without polluting the sea. It can be a exception that some areas might not allow disposing of washwater due to low-alkalinity of water streams such as rives or port areas.
