Take a scenario where the scope is poorly defined, and stakeholders’ expectations are not aligned. You won't get credit simply by stating that it is an issue with scope management. Instead, the question tests your ability to deduce what actions a competent project professional should be taking in this situation. An entirely different approach to the task becomes necessary.
Knowing something via memorisation gives you insight into what it is. The test assesses your ability to comprehend relationships between concepts in the context of real constraints.
How to Approach Scenarios
Read the scenario before reading the question itself. Identify the key problem. Is it a governance issue? Did communication fail somewhere? Was there a risk that was not escalated on time? Define the nature of the problem before seeking a resolution.
Once you have identified what the scenario is about, consider the proposed solutions not in terms of being right or wrong but as priorities. Two solutions might be equally correct, but the test will ask which option deserves higher priority given the context provided.
Think about roles and responsibilities as well. The answer you provide in a question that asks what a project manager needs to do next will be very different from a question asking about escalating an issue to a sponsor.
This type of thinking is not acquired via reading alone. Repetition via realistic practice questions is crucial.
