Preflowers appear at the nodes somewhere around week four to six of vegetative growth, earlier if the plant is stressed. Males form small round sacs on a short stalk while females push out a pair of white hairs, and waiting an extra week beats culling a keeper by mistake. Male to female ratios reported for regular packs on https://budweedseeds.com sit close to even, which matches my own counts. Check daily once the fifth node forms.
