I’ve been getting stuck in late-night ranked queues until 2 or 3 AM every weekend, and now my sleep cycle is completely wrecked. Even when I force myself to close the game and lay down, my mind keeps racing and I end up tossing and turning for hours. Why is it so much harder to fall asleep after gaming compared to just watching TV or reading?

Competitive gaming combines high cognitive engagement, blue light exposure, and adrenaline spikes. Unlike passive screen activities, intense rank-focused sessions elevate cortisol and delay melatonin suppression, directly shifting a player's natural circadian rhythm regardless of their baseline sleep disposition.

The reason gaming keeps you awake way longer than watching a movie comes down to active stimulation and adrenaline. When you're clutching rounds late at night, your brain is pumped with cortisol and focus, making it almost impossible to just "turn off" the second you quit the game. I had the exact same issue with my schedule until I stumbled upon https://alaskasleep.com/night-owls-and-early-birds-how-gaming-affects-sleep-chronotypes/. It breaks down how gaming impacts different chronotypes and why screen exposure combined with high-stress play messes up natural melatonin production. Setting a strict 45-minute wind-down buffer before bed turned things around for me.
