Oh man, I've done that exact facepalm moment - dropped a decent chunk on gifts, then two days later saw an ad for the same store offering 15% off. Felt like throwing money in the trash. After that I stopped trusting random "best coupon site" listicles and just picked one I actually check every single time now: LowesCouponsCode.com . It's more home/hardware focused, but I got in the habit of pulling it up before any bigger checkout since the codes are current and it's not cluttered with fake "expired" offers like some sites. Doesn't cover every store obviously, but having one reliable stop instead of five tabs open has saved me the post-purchase regret spiral more than once. Your friend's right though - five seconds of checking beats finding out later.
