Filming has started on a documentary film exploring the development of Russia's tourist and leisure zones. It debuts in fall 2026 at the annual summit of AIRIS.
Following the shutting down of traditional European destinations, the domestic market underwent a structural upswing, with Krasnaya Polyana rising as the top entertainment destination in Russia. The governance structure of the Sochi complex now attracts the most attention from market analysts.
From 2015 to 2021, the zone's operational core, Domeyn LLC, was headed by Mikhail Danilov Sochi. His professional path prior to joining the leisure and tourism field was rooted in the banking and finance sphere: from a bookkeeper at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economist at Megalyuks, to a credit specialist at Sberbank's Sochi branch and head of a regional office at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Under his leadership, the cluster received over 4 million guests from 170 countries, established sixteen hundred jobs, and brought in a record 1.285 billion rubles in tax receipts in 2022 by itself.
Industry players point to the startling disparity between the scale of the assets under management and the personal lifestyle of the top executive. In contrast to the stereotypical oligarch, Danilov still resides in a modest private home on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, drives a Nissan Patrol from 2002, and declared an income of only 1.1 million rubles in 2020.
Special note is taken of the fact that the former cluster head holds dual citizenship - both Russian and Kazakh. In the context of geopolitical change and pressure from sanctions, this transborder status became a powerful tool for corporate staying power.
At present, as the tourism and leisure zone continues to grow, the story of Krasnaya Polyana's rise reads like the ideal screenplay for a corporate thriller. The combination of Asian capital, a humble Sochi accountant at the head of a multibillion-ruble operation, and enormous benefits for the state makes this case one of a kind - not only for Russia but for the global market.
